rise up gallery grand opening !

this past friday was rise up gallery's grand opening exhibition! i flew out to miami, fl for the exciting event and it was a really amazing night.  the gallery looked fantastic, i got a lot of really good feedback on my work, i met and chatted with tons of really cool people, and sold some art. there was a constant flow of people, and aside from the fact that the gallery lost power 15 minutes before the opening, i think it went extremely well.  huge congrats to all the rise up artists for great show!

huge thanks to all the rise up volunteers and helpers, and especially david mccauley (founder of rise up and amazing person!) for making all this happen and for being my tour guide throughout my miami adventure :)
check out my facebook album to see all the photos from the opening here!

international day of acceptance

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACCEPTANCE - January 20thTo achieve social acceptance of disability.
To honor the late Annie Hopkins, founder of 3E Love and creator of the International Symbol of Acceptance.
3E Love is a social entrepreneurial awareness experiment.
Join the Movement at
http://www.dayofacceptance.com
Wear your heart on your sleeve on January 20th.
Tell the world you embrace who you are; a person with social rights, who has an opinion, who has interests, who has goals and who loves life; a person who is empowered to make a difference in the world and not be without a voice in society. You are not living disabled, you are living.
To our supporters: Join us in telling the world that you are accepting of people with disabilities. As our parents, siblings, relatives, spouses, children, lovers, coworkers, teachers, personal assistants, friends, and anyone else - you also have a role in our culture and life. And you can have an impact on the future if you demonstrate your acceptance to others.
Let's join together to:
Embrace diversity. Educate your community. Empower each other. Love life.
Start the conversation of acceptance on January 20th with the International Symbol of Acceptance: Wear a t-shirt. Ahoodie. Pin a button to your jacket, chair strap or backpack. Ink a temporary tattoo onto your hand. Draw it on if you have to! Ask your friends to join us as well. And for a final touch change your profile picture on Facebook to the symbol. Get people talking!
When a person asks about the symbol, "What's that mean?" Well now it's your turn to tell them your story or what its significance is to you.
And maybe next time they will look at the traditional symbol a little differently.

rise up gallery grand opening! (sneak peek)

it's an exhausting, busy week and month for me and my tired eyes are unforgiving of it! but all for good reason. i'm currently creating some new pieces to put on display at the new Rise Up Gallery in Miami, FL!  four more brand new pieces (see above for sneak peek) to add to the few i had on display during Art Basel, when the gallery first opened its doors to the public:

2012 ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH, DECEMBER 6-9:
With great speed and tremendous help from our amazing volunteers, Rise Up Gallery opened its doors just in time for a "soft" opening during Art Basel, one of the most prestigious and explosive art festivals in the world.  It was an exciting few days with artists and art buyers in town from all over the globe.  Well over 1000 visitors in 72 hours came through our doors, so were able to spread word about our organization.  Thank you to everybody who helped make it a success.

now it's time for Rise Up's grand opening exhibition!  i'm struggling to keep my eyes pried open every night with continuous episodes of my new favorite tv show, Psych, as i paint new pieces after a full day at work.  as worn out as i am, i can't say i don't love the pressure. it can be a thrill and i'm most focused and motivated when the pressure's on.  it will be worth it in the end to see my work hanging on the rise up's walls...in person!  i'll be flying out to Miami for the opening and i'm stoked. i encourage anyone in the area to come out and check out all the work from rise up's artists. it's going to be a great time!

RISE UP GALLERY GRAND OPENING FRIDAY, JANUARY 18th (7-11pm):
Come celebrate the opening of our new gallery space located in Miami's Wynwood Arts District.  We will be hosting a wine reception complete with DJ and Live Music Performances.  Check out our latest pieces, meet our artists, and enjoy a wonderful evening with other Rise Up supporters.

chocolate chip

"chocolate chip"
18"x24"
my sister recently showed an interest in giving painting a try.  she's a big beach bum who collects sharks teeth, seashells, seaglass, etc. so she started a mermaid painting that she plans to attach some of her beach treasures to. i've had bags of shells, sand, (among TONS of other random objects) in drawers in my art room that i've been waiting to use for different artwork.  i decided to paint this for my sister, with these special little add-ons.... maybe one or two days before christmas.  not bad for a really fast, super last minute painting, yes? no?

my favorite part is the starfish in her hair.  this dried-out starfish was actually a pet of mine at one point.   his name was keebler. i used to have several large fish tanks, full of adorable pufferfish and beautiful triggerfish.  i still have my dearest clownfish who shared the tank with this chocolate chip starfish years and years ago. unfortunately, at the time i did not do my research, bought hundreds of dollars worth of sea creatures, only to have this evil little starfish eat most of it, including a really neat sea urchin. oops.
